Former Principal Dancer hopes to mould the next generation

Rudy De Dios graduated as an Outstanding Artist in 2002 as Dance Major at Philippine High School Arts. He took a Bachelor of Performing Arts Major in Dance at the College of Saint Benilde from 2002-2004 where he joined Ballet Philippines as a company artist for 2 years. He then joined Ballet Manila under Ms. Lisa Macuja Elizalde in 2004 and completed the special Vaganova Method Master Class program conducted by visiting teacher Tatiana A. Udalenkova of the Academy of Russian Ballet (Vaganova Choreographic Institute).

 

His repertoire includes Swan Lake (Prince Siegfried), Le Corsaire (Conrad), Don Quixote (Basilio), Carmen (Don Jose), La Fille Mal Gardee (Colas), Giselle (Albrecht), Romeo and Juliet (Romeo), The Nutcracker (Nutcracker Prince), Sleeping Beauty (Prince Florimund), La Bayadere (Solor), Cinderella (Prince Charming), Paquita (Lucien), Diane et Acteon, Flames of Paris, Pinocchio, The Swan, the Fairy and the Princess, Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang (Prinsipeng Ibon), Reve, Arnis, Dancing to Czerny, OFW, Reconfigured, Rebel (Ninoy Aquino) by Martin Lawrence. The pas de deux Ilsa-Dyur was created for him and Lisa Macuja-Elizalde by Bam Augustus Damian. Ibong Adarna (Prinsipe Juan) by Gerardo Francisco Jr.

 

He won the Best Modern Choreography in the Senior Division of the National Music Competition for Young Artists (NAMCYA) in 2008 for Solo Tango. Along with Gerardo Francisco, he won first place as a performer at the 2009 WifiBody Independent Contemporary Dance New Choreographers’ Competition for the piece Balikbayan (OFW). He received the Outstanding Male Lead Performance for both Modern Dance and Classical Dance in the 2012 Gawad Buhay Awards for Tatlong Kuwento ni Lola Basyang (Ang Prinsipe ng mga Ibon) and Romeo and Juliet (Romeo) respectively. And in 2013, he was once again recognized by the Gawad Buhay Awards with the Best Male Lead Performance in a Classical Dance Production for Don Quixote (Basilio). He was awarded for the 9th and 10th Philstage Gawad Buhay Awards for Best Male Lead Performance in Classical Dance: BM’s Cinderella (2017) and Modern Dance: BM’s Ibong Adarna (2018). De Dios was awarded with the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan Award by the City of Manila in June 2017.  In the 30th Annual Aliw Awards, De Dios was recognized as the Best Classical Dancer (Male) in 2017.

 

De Dios was a semi-finalist in the 2nd Beijing International Ballet and Choreography Competition, Choreography Division, held in China in July 2013.

 

He was part of the Ballet Manila tours in the US and Russia and the delegation to the 2006 Angkor-Gyeongju World Expo in Cambodia, as well as the Gyeongju World Performing Arts Festival 2007 in Korea, the Nanying International Folklore festival 2007 in Taiwan, East Meets West in UK and Ireland, 2011 Gyeongju World Culture Expo and the Andong Mask Dance Festival 2011 in Korea, and Flight! With Ballet Manila in Macau in 2013. Rudy was part of the BM delegation in the Asian Grand Prix (AGP) 2016 Winner’s Gala in Hong Kong and was a guest artist at the 2016 International Ballet Festival in Jurmala, Latvia dancing Le Corsaire pas de deux with Katherine Barkman. In 2017, he participated in the 40th Anniversary of the Philippine-Russian Diplomatic relations held in Moscow, Russia. He has also performed Ibong Adarna with Ballet Manila in Tel Aviv, Israel in 2018.

 

De Dios’ recent work was his 1st full-length modern piece he choreographed for Ballet Manila’s 24th Season: CARMINA BURANA last February 2020.
